What People Do…

I recently receive an email from one of my readers, Okan Akildane who run a advertising company called Ceres in Istambul.

He sent me some photos and one video showing how they are using some of my illustrations. And I think it’s a good opportunity to show you what people do with my stuff.

The nice thing of my vector files is they are fully scalable. No matter the big you print it you will always have smooth curves.

And with big sizes there is a beautiful effect from closer views because the whole image almost disappear, and people will probably have a surprise when they get distance and discover the image behind the words.

Thanks Okan!

Lady Agnew

One of my favorite paintings, John Singer Sargen’s Lady Agnew of Lochnaw. The words are the most relevant words of his wikipedia article.

That’s the Text I Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll

ACDC is one of my favorite bands, at least some of his songs will remain in my mind forever. Did you know they have the second highest selling album in history “Back in Black”, behind the Thriller by Michael Jackson. And what can we say about Angus Young… you’re the best man!

For this image I took 156 ACDC lyrics from this site and counted the most used words. As usual the bigger the font is in the image the most it have been used.

The first words of the list: got (329), rock (237), come (235), get (219), gonna (213), want (169), go (155), roll (155), yeah (147), like (133), back (124), love (124), give (116), know (116), ain’t (115), man (114), way (110), make (104), said (95), baby (94), feel (94), take (92), oh (83), can (82), hot (80), night (79), ready (78), time (78), need (77), just (74), jack (72), wanna (70), high (69), one (68), around, (67), good (67), blood (66), dog (64), fire (64), shoot (64), hell (61), turn (61), balls (60), right (60), ’cause (59), live (58), play (58), shake (58), new (57), gun (56), never (56), stand (56), keep (55), look (55), well (55), eyes (54), big (53), woman (52), honey (50), blow (49), gotta (49), shot (48), tonight (46), house (45), blues (44), dirty (44), round (44), bad (42)…

The font used in the spread process is “Squealer” from the band logo. I found it in this web site.

I tried to transmit the electric rhythm of his songs by adding dynamic movement to the words. As a result the images are very abstract but I like most of my tryouts, that’s the reason why you can find more than one in this post.

TEDxt Talks

TED was founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984 and now it’s one of the most interesting sites ever. In TED you can find hundreds of video conferences about a wide range of topics, from design to science or music. But always presenting the ideas in an innovative and engaging ways. And all talks for free viewing online, under a Creative Commons license. Wonderful place… thanks TED!.

TED means Technology Entertainment and Design, but to be sure lets count words…. I took the text of 796 TED conferences and, in this case, remove 500 most frequently used English words. To ensure having only the most representative words. Then I spread all those words over a portrait of one of the founders, Richard Saul. The size of the words is proportional to the number of times the word appears.

The first ones: around (1931), human (1830), design (1544)… nice combination! 🙂

Next ones: sort (1481), create (1390), system (1389), percent (1377), technology (1364), another (1348), important (1348), thank (1323), today (1274), million (1215), bit (1174), understand (1171), kids (1070), computer (1053), brain (1021), nature (1014), believe (1004), experience (1001), become (981), guy (979), dollars (941), organization (935), space (910), maybe (900), away (884), everything (877), sense (859), ok (837), basically (836), stuff (836), reason (833), project (831), africa (825), universe (824), planet (796), probably (793), quite (788), hope (758), energy (754), imagine (743), information (733), data (715), pretty (712), process (705), anything (702), company (698), future (698), months (684), billion (679), case (676), happy (670), moment (641), bad (631)…

I can digg a lot of information about the evolution of these words in time, so perhaps I will come back in the future with more TED stuff.

Oh!, and Happy New Year!.

Haiku of the Atomic Bomb

Haiku is a interesting form of short Japanese poetry. One of the most famous haiku writers is Yasuhiko Shigemoto, who has a book, “My Haiku of Hiroshima”, about the Hiroshima bomb. He has a first hand testimony because he was in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped. Remember, about fifty thousand people died in a second.

This form of art caught my interest so I took some of his haiku, from this webpage, and spread over a photo of the Nagasaki bomb.
