Words Grow
What if words could grow as trees?. A while ago I did a visualization with the words of all Obama speeches, growing as a tree. I’ve updated my code and tested it with some of the words image I’ve published along the time.
Here you have my huge collection of words trees. The first one represents the Darwin book “On the Origin of Species”.
All these trees have a post reference and represent the most used words of a book, a speech or lyrics. The size of the words are proportional to the number of times the word appears in these books or speeches.
Think on it as a step after the word image creation. Because the words colours of these trees was taken from the colours these words have in the image composition. it’s like a combination between the original words analysis and the image colours.
All the images comes from vector based pdfs.

Lorca’s poems
Federico García Lorca has wide range of types of works, but I like a lot his poems, like “A poet in New York”. There is a lot artworks related to Lorca’s works, most of them really beautiful. Probably because it’s inspirational wonderful works.
For this illustration I took all the Lorca poems (in spanish) and counted the most commonly used words.
A nice list, I have to say: niños (215), muerte (210), amor (199), agua (194), corazón (193), noche (180), cielo (156), canto (146), blanco (136), estrellas (130), oh (130), rosa (128), ojos (126), ay (118), luz (118), quiero (117), sangre (117), viento (116), mar (111), mira (111), verde (111), aire (105), negros (105), granada (100)… and another 4.200 different words.

A Hitchcock of 270 Megapixels
I was doing a little research about Alfred Hitchcock when I found this website, the Alfred Hitchcock Wiki. They have 1.000 frames of each Hitchcock’s movie, cool!. So why don’t use all these frames to generate a big… better HUGE Hitchcock portrait.
I took the frames from his ten best movies (of course, my personal best ten list), cleaned and cropped them so don’t have any black or white borders. Then, in order to sort them by bright, I did a little application that calculates the average intensity of each one and give me the list from the brighter to the darker.
The movie list: The 39 Steps (1935), Rebecca (1940), Foreign Correspondent (1940), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (1941), Notorious (1946), Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960) and finally The Birds (1963).
Then I spread these 10.000 frames over a portrait of Alfred Hitchcock. But In my first tryouts I noticed that frames become too much little. It was a pity, so I decided to make a really BIG illustration.
It was really hard because I broke all the limits of my software, the only way to generate such a big file was by splitting the render in different parts. But you know, Hitchcock deserves it!.
And here you have my final illustration. A 270 megapixels image (14310x19805pixels). Please be careful, this image could kill your browser if you try to look at it directly. You better right click and “save as” to your hard disk and look trough a good image viewer.

Do you want to play?. Did you know that Hitchcock loved to appears in his movies as a figurant. Are you able to find him in some of these frames?.
The Oscars 2011
The next Sunday we will have new Oscar winners. And it’s true, we will remember only the winners… but as a tribute to Little Miss Sunshine and because the best is not always the winner, I think it would be nice if we make a visualization with all the nominees…
So I took all the relevant names and movies from the official nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards from this website, and spread them over an image of the Oscar.
Javier Bardem, Biutiful, Jeff Bridges, True Grit, Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network, Colin Firth,The King’s Speech, James Franco, 127 Hours, Christian Bale, The Fighter, John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone, Jeremy Renner, The Town, Mark Ruffalo, The Kids Are All Right, Geoffrey Rush, The King’s Speech, Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right, Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence, Winter’s Bone, Natalie Portman, Black Swan, Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine, Amy Adams, The Fighter, Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech, Melissa Leo, The Fighter, Hailee Steinfeld… till 336 names.
And the winner is…
That’s the Text I Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll
ACDC is one of my favorite bands, at least some of his songs will remain in my mind forever. Did you know they have the second highest selling album in history “Back in Black”, behind the Thriller by Michael Jackson. And what can we say about Angus Young… you’re the best man!
For this image I took 156 ACDC lyrics from this site and counted the most used words. As usual the bigger the font is in the image the most it have been used.
The first words of the list: got (329), rock (237), come (235), get (219), gonna (213), want (169), go (155), roll (155), yeah (147), like (133), back (124), love (124), give (116), know (116), ain’t (115), man (114), way (110), make (104), said (95), baby (94), feel (94), take (92), oh (83), can (82), hot (80), night (79), ready (78), time (78), need (77), just (74), jack (72), wanna (70), high (69), one (68), around, (67), good (67), blood (66), dog (64), fire (64), shoot (64), hell (61), turn (61), balls (60), right (60), ’cause (59), live (58), play (58), shake (58), new (57), gun (56), never (56), stand (56), keep (55), look (55), well (55), eyes (54), big (53), woman (52), honey (50), blow (49), gotta (49), shot (48), tonight (46), house (45), blues (44), dirty (44), round (44), bad (42)…
The font used in the spread process is “Squealer” from the band logo. I found it in this web site.
I tried to transmit the electric rhythm of his songs by adding dynamic movement to the words. As a result the images are very abstract but I like most of my tryouts, that’s the reason why you can find more than one in this post.

TEDxt Talks
TED was founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984 and now it’s one of the most interesting sites ever. In TED you can find hundreds of video conferences about a wide range of topics, from design to science or music. But always presenting the ideas in an innovative and engaging ways. And all talks for free viewing online, under a Creative Commons license. Wonderful place… thanks TED!.
TED means Technology Entertainment and Design, but to be sure lets count words…. I took the text of 796 TED conferences and, in this case, remove 500 most frequently used English words. To ensure having only the most representative words. Then I spread all those words over a portrait of one of the founders, Richard Saul. The size of the words is proportional to the number of times the word appears.
The first ones: around (1931), human (1830), design (1544)… nice combination! 🙂
Next ones: sort (1481), create (1390), system (1389), percent (1377), technology (1364), another (1348), important (1348), thank (1323), today (1274), million (1215), bit (1174), understand (1171), kids (1070), computer (1053), brain (1021), nature (1014), believe (1004), experience (1001), become (981), guy (979), dollars (941), organization (935), space (910), maybe (900), away (884), everything (877), sense (859), ok (837), basically (836), stuff (836), reason (833), project (831), africa (825), universe (824), planet (796), probably (793), quite (788), hope (758), energy (754), imagine (743), information (733), data (715), pretty (712), process (705), anything (702), company (698), future (698), months (684), billion (679), case (676), happy (670), moment (641), bad (631)…
I can digg a lot of information about the evolution of these words in time, so perhaps I will come back in the future with more TED stuff.

Oh!, and Happy New Year!.
missed (233) laughs (209)
A little tribute to Leslie Nielsen. As you all probably know Leslie passed away a couple of weeks ago, after a long career in wich he crossed a variety of genres in television and films… but we all know him because he made us laugh…. sorry I mean LAUGH!.
For this visualization I took 1214 user comments from this website. About 25.500 words. I spread all those words over a portrait of Leslie with sizes proportional to it’s repetition. Nicely the first two most used words are ‘missed’ and ‘laughs’… simply true.
The beggining of the word list: rip (279), missed (233), laughs (209), thanks (209), one (166), great (137), movie (129), mr (121), shirley (120), actor (114), man (112), loved (111), call (110), rest (106), peace (104), surely (101), funny (98), time (93), just (91), good (87), sad (83), airplane (76), many (76), serious (72), like (71), made (71), family (65), always (63), naked (60), years (60), gun (58), planet (57), now (56), remember (56), watch (56), world (56), comedy (55), forbidden (54), ever (53), can (50), well (50), never (49), day (48), making (48), guy (47), nielson (45), friends (44), people (44), think (44), life (43), really (43), going (42), know (42), films (39), live (39), much (39), work (39), comedian (38), rumack (38), best (37), played (37), comedic (36), roles (36)…
Thank you very much and… goodbye Shirley!.
The Mentalist
The Mentalist is one of my favorites TV shows, probably because Patrick Jane is insanely funny but, at the same time, it looks like he has a hidden ‘dark’ side. And, of course, I love the way he break the rules.
For this image I analyzed english dialogues of the first two seasons, and here you have the most used words: jane (449), guys (368), sorry (358), lisbon (302), agent (252), murder (248), cho (201), nice (190), rigsby (189), kid (167), boss (152), john (152), van (147), cbi (141), husband (140), pelt (139), real (139), excuse (132), phone (125), truth (117), patrick (116), killer (114), stuff (111), police (110), couple (108), anyone (107), cop (107), victim (99), drugs (97), somebody (97), charge (96), arrest (95), investigation (94), hurt (92), nobody (92), hell (90), mom (89), shot (87), jim (82), lawyer (81), dad (80), whatever (80), crime (78), damn (78), suspect (77), serious (76), bosco (75)…
I know this image looks a little bit crazy, but all on this tv show looks distorted so I feel it must be the spirit of the show.

The Beatles
What can I say about The Beatles?. The most iconic band ever.
For this visualization I took the lyrics of 290 Beatles song’s and I analyzed the most used words. Do you guess wich one is the most used?… by far: LOVE.
The most used: love (701), know (464), oh (347), baby (293), go (281), well (264), say (259), come (251), get (239), can (232), want (226), now (225), got (222), see (216), like (199), yeah (186), just (184), girl (180), hey (173), tell (167), little (162), day (160), one (157), way (154), make (153), time (147), back (144), take (130), said (127), feel (125), good (125), right (125), look (121), never (121), cry (120), home (117), need (115), long (110), yeh (109), night (107), things (105), think (104), man (103), leave (99), waiting (94), please (93), mine (91), yes (89), hold (88), away (87), better (86), try (86), dance (84), heart (83), much (80), mind (76), ever (73)…
In the first image the words size are proportional to the number of times a word appears. In the next images the most used are bigger but there is no relationship between the word size and the visualization data.
Lot of songs, lot of data… I will post again about The Beatles.
The Secret of Jules Verne
He was the pioneer of science-fiction genre, one of the most translated author of all time and certainly a source of inspiration for all of us. Verne did accurate anticipations of modern times and wrote about submarines and space travel before they were invented.
You can read more about Verne in his wikipedia article.
I took more than 25 of his books and count all the words. The book list:
A Winter Amid the Ice and Other Thrilling Stories, Five Weeks in a Balloon, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras, In Search of the Castaways, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, ll Around the Moon, The Adventures of a Special Correspondent, Around the World in 80 Days, The Mysterious Island, The Survivors of the Chancellor, Michael Strogoff, Off on a Comet, The Underground City, Celebrated Travels and Travellers, Dick Sand A Captain at Fifteen, Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon, Godfrey Morgan a Californian Mistery, The Waif of the Cynthia, Robur the Conqueror, Ticket No. 9672, In the Year 2889, Facing the Flag and The Master of the World.
The best part is that you can donwload all those books for free. Search for Verne in the Project Guttemberg website. There is also differente languaje versions.
Take a look at the first words of the list… Does it remind you something?

Words to Victory
This will be my last World Cup visualization. I took from Marca.com all the comments the readers left in each match between Spain and other countries. More than 25.000.
The first graph show the evolution of the most used words. The second one only the names of the players and, of course, the coach. The graph, in both cases, shows an average number in groups of 30 comments.
The face of ‘de Bosque’ has the most used words sized proportional to number of times the word appears.
It was funny to notice how the battle between Spain and Argentina was beyond the championship itself.

So I sorted and counted the words from more than 250 post, from october 2007 to september 2010, and here you have the results.
It would be nice to receive some advices from him.
Hope you like it man!.
Words for a Kiss
It looks like the thing couldn’t get better… but it happened, live, suddenly, some tears… A KISS!
He made a mess of it.
For this image I have collected over 750 comments (in Spanish) about the kiss, made by the readers of 20minutos.es, and I counted the words most frequently used. Then I spread those words with sizes proportional to their repetition. They are all, without censorship on my part, the nice and not so nice ones.

I know what happened … it passes through his head and probably thought “now or never”. I know because it happened to all of us once in our live and still regret not having done so. He did … so thanks Iker for reminding us that we must seize the day.
For me it is a gift, a picture to remember … something simple becomes a symbol, a moment that will stay with us forever.
It remember me the famous photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, the sailor kissing a nurse at the end of World War II.
Iker said “it has been spontaneous”, but I would better say “it has been creative”.
In this second picture I posted two charts. The first shows 40 most used words evolution in groups of 10 comments, the second table show all the words with the number of times they appears.

Apple Sales
Apple recently announced financial results for its fiscal 2010 second quarter. As usually they grow again.
In the above image I have reconstructed the face of Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, with the Apple products. But you know, I always want to add some kind of information… in this case the number of times a certain product appears is proportional to the sales number.
Q2 2010 sales by products: Desktop: 1.15 million units, Portables: 1.8 million units, iPod: 10.9 million units and iPhone: 8.75 million units.
Che Guevara
A Che Guevara portrait based in the photo taken in 1960 by Alberto Korda. It is probably one of the most used icons in the world with a lots of variations in differents sizes and formats… and I want to have my own version of it.
The words are the most used words of Guevara’s book “Diarios de Motocicleta”.

You probably don’t care about this… but I want to show you part of my image creation process.
At the beginning, I usually obtain the text information (like lyrics, books, or quotes) through the web, just with a web browser. Then I usually choose the seed image from Wikipedia or Google Images. The image always need a manual modification. For the text I also have my own tool, based in the snowball stemmer, that let me count words and generates an analysis file.
With the seed image and the analysis file, I let my main tool (I called it IaT) to take care of the spread process. It is always the hard part because requires a lots of tryouts till I get something usefull, and it is a highly time consuming process.
After the spread process, I have the result and then the fun start… I made a post-production image modification tool that let me change a lot of things like add random colors, invert words colors, change the word position randomly, increase size, drop shadow, etc… It is very usefull because I could give it to the final client and let choose by himself. Take a look at the tool shell.
It let me try differents options and fine tuning my images. For example with the Che image I did a lot of different versions before select the final one. Look at some of them.
Do you agree with my final decision?. By the way, if you like another one drop me a message and I will also post it. Perhaps you think that the words are not the right ones, send me your list and I will consider a remake…
See you!.
Kate Evolution
It was funny to see how people use the data of my last Lost post trying to solve whom Kate loves. I think I can help… Take a look at this new visualization focused in the Kate words. All she said from episode 1×01 to 6×11.
There are three different images. In the portrait the word size is proportional to word’s repetitions. The second one analyses the words around a determinate word, in this case the three possible winners, Jack, Sawyer and Aaron. The distance to the main word is the average distance. In the last one you can see the evolution of the 30 most used words by Kate along the show seasons.
Some considerations:
– I add “James” count to “Sawyer” in order to compare real totals.
– The size of the words around Jack, Sawyer and Aaron are proportionals to their respective numbers. That’s because I want to compare the relative importance to each one but don’t want to loose ‘resolution’ because of the ‘Jack’ big numbers.
– In the graphs, the value of each episode count are the average of episodies around it. That’s because in some episodies Kate don’t even appears.
You probably miss one word… but the only time she said ‘sex’ was when reading the Sawyer letter… in 01×08.
Enjoy it.

The words of the numbers
Encouraged by this news, I made my own analysis of the last budget’s speech by Alistair Darling.
First I recreated the face of Mr. Darling with the data suggested. As usual the size of the words is proportional to the repetition.
Later, using my own text analysis over the last eleven budget’s speeches, I made different visualizations showing distance’s relationship and the evolution of the most used, or most significative, words.
The last one is focused in the word ‘tax’. In this case the distance to the words is the average distance in the speeches. The big one represent all years from 2005 to 2010. The other two are focused in their own year.
Due to the filesize I recomend you to download and navigate the PDF version.

The Words Of Jesus
Since we are in Easter I think it’s time to answer an email that Luis Barcelo sent to me a month ago. He suggested about an image only with the words that Jesus said.
Great idea!, but how to find what Jesus was recorded as saying?. Well this hard work is already done by JB Phillips as you can see in this website. He has the New Testaments books with the Jesus words in red. Easy task, isolate these words by using the select by format of any text processing application and we are done.
For the curious the beginning of the my counted words list with ALL the words: the (836), you (626), and (546), to (430), of (349), i (305), is (278), that (223), will (216), your (215), who (209), in (203), for (191), it (187), a (185), have (174), not (168), me (164), are (163), be (153), but (151), man (141), what (120), he (118), my (116), do (113), come (108), has (101), him (98), his (94), father (91), god (89), they (88), go (84), from (82), this (79), if (78), one (77), as (74), can (71), all (66), no (66), on (66), say (64), them (64), know (62), believe (61), up (61), with (60), am (58), when (56), life (53), out (51), give (50), into (50), or (50), see (50), son (49), how (47), so (47), good (46), then (46), which (46), at (45), must (45), those (45), by (43), now (43), like (42), heaven (41), there (41), men (40), own (38), hear (35), never (35), things (35), tell (34), their (34), was (34), don’t (33), let (33), shall (33), because (32), people (32), sent (32), does (30), eye (30), kingdom (28), make (28), day (27), even (27), live (27)…
From this list we will remove all the single characters words and ‘the’, ‘to’, ‘of’ and ‘and’. Sometimes I also remove ‘you’ because of the big distance between this one and the rest of words.
You can Download the full list here: thewordsofjesus.
The other problem is the base image. Which one?. Luis send me an image from the movie The Passion, and I made a couple of images using it. Take a look.

But I want to go further.
The only change to find a ‘real’ image of Jesus is the The Holy Shroud of Turin. And we have a useful reconstruction, a painting created in 1935 by an Armenian artist named Ariel Aggemian. There is a funny history that joins this image, computers and an indian spiritual master. I retouched it a little bit in order to have a sharp result as base image.
As final step let me choose a representative font. The first modern print of the Biblia was made in 1454 by Gutenberg and we have a very nice free font that mimics that print here.
We have all ingredientes!. So, here we go…

Hope you like it.

Dennis Hopper: one (148) great (129) movie (128) man (108)
As a tribute to Dennis Lee Hopper, probably the best ‘bad guy’ in the cinema ever. After a hard battle against a prostate cancer he passed away on May 29.
Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Speed… the list of movies is endless.
Yes I know… there were a lot of trouble in his life but he was one of the few free spirits out there.
For this image I took about one thousand comments that people left after his death from this site and counted the most commonly used words. I find it quite interesting that the first most used words are ‘one’, ‘great’, ‘movie’, ‘man’. So I will use them as the image title.
The first most used words:
