Generative Composition
Here we go Again. Now with a composition application programmed in processing.
The program takes a bunch of images and generate a composition using a (random) growing pattern algoritm. If you dont like the composition you just have to click and the program will generate a new random composition… till the one you like.
The nice thing is that you can have a mask layer. The black parts of the mask image will be areas forbidden for the algoritm.
As an example I used more than 200 photos from one of my last architectural project, a retail centre in Lorca (Spain). Click to enlarge view or download PDF version.
Playing with… Einstein
I made a little modification to my program by adding the possibility of randomly pre-inserting some words… the target is to create some kind of “word search” game.
In this example you have to find numbers form 0 to 9.

Yes, I know… after seven seasons the show is over but it is so funny and the words are important within so many fast dialogues…

iDim, ultrafast autocad dimensioning
Add dimension in autocad is one of the most boring task… To avoid it, and because I’m lazy, I made an autolisp application that add dimension to lines. I called it “idim” and I want to share it with you because it is very usefull.
Some considerations: The dimension will be in the current layer with the current dimension style. It will add dimensions only to line entities. It will try to detect ‘holes’ and add a dimension to it.
Instructions: appload idim.vlx, type idim… select lines… go!
It’s on beta stage. In future versions it will let you choose offset and other variables.

Well, this is the last of the series. Only for true geeks, who are able to read binary.
It was easier to define because the zeros and ones can be read from any angle. Also there is no lenguaje version, just binary numbers. The random colors represent months, days a week and tens.
The only difficulty was to modify a font to make the zero and one as simple as possible.
I think this obsession with calendars is somehow an attempt to avert the 2010. Now 2010 is so close that I think is time to move on to other things.
As a bonus there you have a mix version between binary and spiral.

The random branches generates a month division, so each month have a large numbers of ways to get to the end… as life itself.

RPC objects are great for 3D rendering. They render fast and it is easy to setup.
But sometimes you just don’t need photorealistic trees or people. For example in an architectural competition, in order to show the building scale, people inserts only human transparent silhouettes.

2010 Fractal Calendar
Another processing experiment. This time I coded a generative calendar where the days follow an espiral shape. Each rotation represent a year.
Well there is a big lie in the post title. This calendar is not fractal, but you can see a lot of years if you zoom. So, in some way it looks like a fractal.
The moon phase and the 24h daylight clock are suitable for Madrid (Spain). The colors are randomly taken from a palette. One color for each week or month. I added some depth by turning the colors darker in each step.
Probably I will post two or three calendar designs before the end of 2009. I researched a lot and now I have enough tools and ideas for more versions.
As usual, the bigger you print the better it looks.

Obama tree.
We will go a step forward from this Obama Post. Remember in that case I counted all the words in more than one hundred Obama speeches.
Using the same data I made a new algorithm based on a simple tree structure but, in this case, the branches are the words.
The tree structure is highly random, but the size o the words (branch width) is always proportional to the number of times the word appears in the speeches.
The image contains four samples with different color variations. The branches take their color from the original Obama photo post. I added some transparency so the overlap generates more color variations.
The algorithm generates a new random version of the tree every time I click. So I just clicked till I obtained a nice one and then saved it as pdf.

Marillion was one of my favorites bands… while Fish was in there.
In the Fish era all the albums covers was made by Mark Wilkinson. Really beatifull drawings that match perfectly with the introspective songs lyrics.
Let’s go. I mix both concepts counting all the words from Marillion (with Fish) lyrics and one of their album covers.

In this case the problem was the huge step between the first words. Take a look at the word list:

So I decided to insert a kind of ‘brake’ in the algorithm that makes the steps between words shorter. Yes, we lose accurate proportionality but still retain importance degree between words.

Here is my version of the usual “Imagine by John Lennon” art. An irresistible temptation took me to make my own version of this really nice (and better than mine) image .
In this case the words just spread without a fixed height. There is more than 20.000 words so I estimate that it show all the words of the song about fifty times.

House MD is one of my favorites TV show, I really enjoy the show. House deserves a tribute!.
Hands on it, I collected all the subtitles of the first five seasons from the website http://www.tvsubtitles.net/ something like 115 episodes.
Because the subtitles are ‘common language’ there is not so much information as in a song or a speech. I needed to clean up the word list in order to have a significant result.
So I increased the numbers of words that the algoritm will discard during the counting process
using the 1000 most commonly used English words that I found in http://www.duboislc.org/EducationWatch/First100Words.html
I also realized that there is a lot of strange words with only one hit, probably due to the nature of the subtitles. I decided to include only the words with two or more hits.
Here is the final image!… Cuddy would be proud.
